- (literally, probably folk-lore) A cage containing a banana with a hole large enough for a monkey’s hand to fit in, but not large enough for a monkey’s fist (clutching a banana) to come out. Used to “catch” monkeys that lack the intellect to let go of the banana and run away.
- (figuratively) A clever trap of any sort, that owes its success to the ineptitude or gullibility of the victim.
Our world size monkey? trap was set before the monkeys (apes) even evolved. Millions of years of stored sunlight, laying quietly under the earths crust, once harvested, enabled us to explosively grow our populations, our consumptions and our aspirations. Like any large windfall, it came with some unexpected drawbacks – the inability to imagine and plan for a future when the flow of magic slowly (or quickly) might recede. Yet we grasp tightly to the banana still.
